Winter Home of Harness Racing!
Pompano Park the only standardbred track in Florida. The original site
opened in 1953 as a winter training facility, with plans to someday
build a racetrack there. It was finally approved in 1963, and in 1964
Pompano Park opened for business as a harness track. Over the years many
legs of the prestigious Breeders Crown Series have been run at Pompano
Park.
In 1972 Quarter Horse racing was introduced during the summer
months to create more revenue. In 1984 it turned out to be a
disaster, over 100 horses were banned from racing from a doping
scandal, it also seemed like the jockeys were as juiced as the
horses. After a year off quarter horse racing returned in 1986. For
how long it went on after that, who knows.
In 2011 Pompano ran it's January to December schedule taking off the mid summer months. Wally Hennessey captured the driving title.
