  Texas Toast!

Retama Park Retama Park the second class I track to open in Texas never lived up to expectation. Built on a grand scale near San Antonio it never came close to rewarding investors and filed for bankruptcy a year after it opened. It was repurchased and remains active today sharing Quarter Horse and ThorougRetama Parkhbred meets with Texas's other two class I tracks. Retama has a purse value index of 20 and does not have a racino format. Retama was responsible for putting nearby Bandera Downs out of business when it opened.

In 2011 Retama ran separate thoroughbred and quarter horse meets. Like the other Texas tracks the number of racing days were reduced. Larry Taylor won the thoroughbred riding title. Racing is planned for 2012 but there appears to be no racinos in sight for the Texas Tracks, the future could be bleak!

You probably won't mistake Retama Park for the Alamo, but is does have the same mission style architecture. The track is named for a green limbed deciduous tree or shrub native to south and west Texas.
